Import Digital Filter

The Import Digital Filter option will successively average the input values for n points and store these averages in the data table. All of the supported file formats can be used with the digital filter options. Use these digital filter option when you wish to reduce a large number of data points to a more manageable size for fitting, or when your data set exceeds the program's maximum of 65536 points.

The Append Digital Filter option functions similarly, except that the current data is not cleared within the data table.

As an example, digitally filtering a 10,000 point data file with n=20 and beginning with the first data point, would result in a data set containing 500 points, each point representing a twenty point average on the raw data.

The n for the filter can range from 1 to 999 and the starting point can be any within the extent of the data. Note that setting n=1 and starting at point 1 is the same as using the standard Import option.

Note that a simple averaging digital filter is primarily useful for reduction of very large data sets in an import procedure. For a far more accurate reduction or enhancement of data, or to create uniformly spaced X data, TableCurve 2D provides a variety of estimation procedures in the Estimate menu.
